Installing

  1. Download zip-archive from the downloads page.
  2. Unzip it to any location.
It is recommended to unzip into C:\Program Files\ (for Windows x86) or C:\Program Files (x86)\ (for x64) folder.

Upgrading from previous version

  1. Delete folder with previous version of recorder.
  2. Install new version.
Last version of application uses the same format of settings, so they automatically migrate to the newly installed version.

Starting

To start an application execute SkypeAutoRecorder.exe from the location where it is installed to. Note, that application starts automatically with Windows if you configure it in settings (see Configuration section).

After start the icon of application appears in the system tray.

Only one instance of recorder can run simultaneously.

First start

Skype shows attachment request on the first start of recorder:

Press Allow access to allow interaction with Skype.

Note: some antiviruses may block application functionality. In this case add SkypeAutoRecorder.exe to the exceptions.

Using recorder

Skype Auto Recorder is always visible in the system tray:
Tray.png
The tray icon and tooltip show the current application state:
  • DisconnectedTrayIcon.ico Disconnected. Skype isn’t running or user has declined attachment request. Recorder is waiting for Skype.
  • ReadyTrayIcon.ico Ready. Application is connected to Skype and ready for recording calls.
  • RecordingTrayIcon.ico Recording. Application is recording Skype call.

The tray icon has the context menu:
Menu.png
  • Start recording (Ctrl+Shift+F5) or double click on tray icon – starts recording of the current call. It is available when application doesn't start recording automatically. In this case you can start it manually. Recorder uses default file name for output file.
  • Cancel recording (Ctrl+Shift+F10) - cancels recording. Recorder doesn't produce any output file in this case. Recording can't be started again after canceling.
  • Browse records - opens folder where all unfiltered conversation are recorded to.
  • Browse last record - opens folder and selects last recorded file.
  • Settings - opens settings window.
  • Help – opens this documentation.
  • About – shows information about application.
  • Close – cancels recording and closes the application.
The hot keys are system-wide and available when you focus any other application.

Recorder produces MP3-files with sound quality chosen in settings.

If application for some reason can’t distribute file to the specified location (for instance, network path or removable drive is inaccessible) then it stores file to the default path for the current user and tells about it via message box.

Configuration

In the most cases you have to configure Skype Auto Recorder only once. After that it works silently without any additional requests to user.

Open settings window from the context menu.

First setting is Autostart with Windows. Recorder starts automatically with operation system when this setting is enabled. It is stored in the Run section of Windows registry.

There are also 2 tabs of settings: records related and sound related. All settings are stored per user in the Windows Roaming folder.

Reset to default button cancels all changes made by user and restores default settings.

Records settings

RecordsSettings.png
On this tab it's possible to configure filters and the names for output files.
Filters provide a convenient way to save records automatically into different folders depends on conversation partner name.

To add a new filter do the following:
  1. Click Add. New line will appear in the list of filters.
  2. Enter contact in the first column. You should specify Skype login for each contact, not it's display name. The login can be seen in the contact properties in Skype. Any number of contacts separated with comma or semicolon can be set per filter.
  3. Enter output file name in the second column. You can use SelectFolder.png Select folder button near text box to select folder, and then manually add file name to it. If folder doesn't exists it will be created automatically with the first recorded file. Recorder overwrites file if it's already exists. It's possible to use placeholders (see below in this section) in the path or file name to produce different files.
Filter can be deleted using respective button Remove.png Remove filter in the list to the right of filter.

All calls can be recorded automatically to the specified file name without setting contact names. To use this option enable Record unfiltered conversations to and specify target file name similarly to file name in filter.

Some contacts can be excluded from automatic recording by adding them into the Don’t record conversations with contacts text box (separated with comma or semicolon). Note, that it works only for contacts which are not specified in the filters. Also, it's possible to record ignored call manually by clicking Start recording menu button.

File names can contain placeholders:
  • {contact} – login of contact who are speaking with you.
  • {date-time} – date and time of starting conversation (in format "yyyy-MM-dd HH.mm.ss").
  • {duration} – duration of the recorded conversation (in format "hh.mm.ss").
All placeholder are shown on the bottom of the Records tab. Clicking on them copies placeholder text into clipboard.

If you want to save only one file with last call then don’t use placeholders: the recorded file will always have the same name and recorder will overwrite it.

If you don’t specify extension in the file name then .mp3 will be added automatically. If you want to set only folder name (default file name will be used in this case) then end it with "\" char.

Settings window verifies all inputs to exclude possible mistakes in the file names.

Sound settings

SoundSettings.png
By default recorder automatically choses sound quality depends on initial conversation sound quality.

Alternatively it's possible to set desired sound quality using setting Produce high-quality MP3-file:
  • 32, 44.1 or 48 kHz
  • 192, 256 or 320 kbps

Setting Separate sound channels allows producing stereo records: first channel contains sound from your microphone and the second - from speakers.

Setting Increase volume of the recorded file increases volume of MP3 file in specified X times. It is useful when your partner has a low microphone. Note, that too high increasing may corrupt sound.

How Skype Auto Recorder works

When call starts recorder do the following steps:
  1. Get the contact login.
  2. Tries to find login in the filters. If filter found then specified file name is used and recording starts. Otherwise recorder does next step.
  3. Checks if Record unfiltered conversations is enabled and contact login isn't excluded. In this case recorder takes file name for unfiltered conversations and starts recording.

If recorder fails to save file for some reason:
  1. It takes file name for unfiltered conversations and tries to use it.
  2. If previous failed too, then recorder saves file into the Roaming folder for the current Windows user.
In both cases recorder tells about fail using message box and asks if user want to navigate to the recorded file automatically.

When you click Start recording recorder uses file name for unfiltered conversations.

Uninstalling

To remove application from the system completely do the following:
  1. Start application and open settings. Disable Autostart with Windows setting if it's enabled.
  2. Close application. Delete folder with all application files.
  3. Open explorer and navigate to %AppData%. Delete SkypeAutoRecorder directory with application settings.
